The Charolais breed of sheep also originates from the Saône-&-Loire department.

This breed has resulted from the selection performed on the local ovine population within the Charolais region as of the beginning of the 1960's. Official recognition was bestowed on the breed in 1974.

The Charolais sheep is especially reputed for its outstanding conformation and excellent meat-yielding qualities. It is not only produced in France on many cattle farms, but also in numerous other countries.

The Charolais has become the most widely-exported ovine breed in all of France.
