SOLUTRE

A spectacular limestone cliff, situated amongst the vineyards of the Mâconnais region. The rock outcroppings at Solutré-Pouilly, Vergisson and Mont Pouilly have been registered and protected as "a major national site" by the Environment Ministry. At the base of the Solutré Rock, the "Crot-du-Charnier" outcropping contains thousands of prehistoric horse fossils, along with many artefacts, engraved silex and stones, dated back to civilisations ranging from the Aurignacian era to the Magdalenian era (28,000 to 10,000 B.C.), and notably during the period referred to as the "Solutrean era". The Prehistory Museum. Hike to the summit (45 min. up and back). Panoramic view.
