SOLUTRE
A spectacular limestone cliff, situated
amongst the vineyards of the Mâconnais
region. The rock outcroppings at Solutré-Pouilly,
Vergisson and Mont Pouilly have been
registered and protected as "a
major national site" by the Environment
Ministry. At the base of the Solutré
Rock, the "Crot-du-Charnier"
outcropping contains thousands of prehistoric
horse fossils, along with many artefacts,
engraved silex and stones, dated back
to civilisations ranging from the Aurignacian
era to the Magdalenian era (28,000 to
10,000 B.C.), and notably during the
period referred to as the "Solutrean
era". The Prehistory Museum. Hike
to the summit (45 min. up and back).
