Renowned for its Romanesque monuments and high-quality agricultural produce, the Saône-&-Loire also features an extraordinary industrial heritage.

Just imagine that at the turn of the century Le Creusot once provided jobs to over 30,000 steelworkers and Chalon-sur-Saône served as a wartime port where frigates and submarines used to be built and where Deng Xiaoping, who would go on to rule China, was actually an employee of the Schneider Empire…

Yet the Saône-&-Loire boasts an industrial tradition that extends beyond the major population centres of Le Creusot-Montceau, Chalon and Mâcon, as a good number of highly-productive plant sites are located in the heart of rural and farming areas; examples include Ivéco in Bourbon-Lancy, Ugine in Gueugnon, Potain in La Clayette and LDC in Louhans.

In 1900, 20 mineshafts were operating in Montceau-les-Mines. This number would reach 24 in 1914.
